Eigentlich beginnt die Vorbereitung auf eine Welt- oder Europameisterschaft bereits über 2 Jahre vor dem eigentlichen Event, nämlich mit der Teamqualifikation laut Qualifikationsmodus des ÖAeC. Dieser Qualifikationsmodus sieht die erfolgreiche Teilnahme an mindestens 6 nationalen und/oder internationalen Wettbewerben plus der österreichischen Bundesmeisterschaft über einen Zeitraum von zwei Jahren vor. Die drei erfolgreichsten Piloten werden dann von der Bundessektion des ÖAeC für das Nationalteam nominiert.
Für die nun bereits 4. Weltmeisterschaft der FAI-Klasse F3f im Jahr 2018 haben sich entsprechend dem Qualifikationsmodus Philipp Stary, Stefan Fraundorfer und Martin Ziegler qualifiziert. Martin Ziegler hat seine Nominierung zurückgelegt und Lukas Gaubatz rückt nun an seiner Stelle nach. Mario Perner wurde wieder als Teammanager nominiert. Das österreichische F3f-Team 2018 besteht somit aus einem guten Mix aus Neulingen und "alten Hasen": Für Philipp wird es die erste WM-Teilnahme überhaupt werden. Stefan Fraundorfer kann bereits auf erfolgreiche WM-Teilnahmen in der FAI-Klasse F5d zurückblicken, in F3f wird es seine erste Teilnahme werden. Für Lukas Gaubatz und Mario Perner ist dies nun bereits die vierte WM in der Klasse F3f.
